Here's the drive train of our 2005 robot, as seen in week four of the build season. The robot was powered by four CIM motors (only two are shown in this picture) running into the single-speed Kit of Parts transmission from Innovation FIRST. The robot was featured 6WD (six wheel drive), with six 8" Skyway wheel chair wheels. The center wheels had custom roughtop tread in a pocket milled into the hard rubber. The center wheels were also lowered by 1/4", so the robot could turn easier. Tensioning the chain was accomplished by a series of HDPE blocks which could be moved along the slots of the 80/20 frame. All in all, although we had occasional problems (but they were almost entirely at the end of the competition season, e.g. BattleCry and Bash@theBeach) with screws backing out and the plastic hubs in the Skyway wheels shattering, we were quite pleased with the agility and performance of our 2005 drive train.
