Here's Ryan, Gary, and Ben working on changing out the gears in our tri-wheel carriers at the event, to accommodate for new ones which used an idler gear to reverse the output wheel direction. Eventually, we realized that we had forgotten another major part of the design of the tri-wheel idea; that being the center "sun" gear must be larger than the surrounding planetary gears. We had it backwards. The reason the sun gear has to be larger is because if it was not, the entire setup would act as a planetary gearbox and the entire wheel carrier would want to rotate when instead only the wheels should spin. (This is the problem we had.) What it should correctly do (when the sub gear is larger), is that the power should transmit out to the wheels all of the time. But if for some reason one of the wheels gets stuck, the entire wheel carrier should rotate over. This was our original plan for climbing the step in the 2004 game. Because this idea failed, we abandoned any ideas of hanging on the bar.
