March 7, 2010

An ode to the WPI Regional:

Alliances are red,
Alliances are blue,
Let's work in coopertition,
To make Dean's dreams come true.

Gus is looking forward to competing with all teams who are attending the WPI Regional this coming week! Look for us in the orange shirts and be sure to get a hug from our new mascot, Fuego!

CT VEX Tournament Champions!

February 28, 2010

On a date that was nothing short of destiny, 2-28, Gus had a double tournament win at the CT VEX Tournament in Manchester. Gus fielded two teams, 228a and 228b, that consisted of identical robotics. Between their two teams, Gus won four awards at this competition, the Driver Skills award, two tournament champions, and a design award. At the end of qualification rounds, 228a was ranked #1 and chose 228b. Our third alliance pick was team 1709, whom we thank for their contribution to our tournament win. Overall, between their two robots and two competitions, team Gus has a 32-1-0 record, with 228a continuing to be undefeated.

Gus now cannot wait for April when we go to the VEX world championships in Dallas, Texas.

Build Season 2010

February 23, 2010

After just over six weeks, our robot, Gus12 was picked up by Fed-Ex. Over these weeks, we overcame the expected challenges, while also transcending a few monkey wrenches that were thrown in our gears. But as always, these weeks were filled with good memories and experiences. Veteran students learned more about engineering and design, while new students learned the fundamentals of robot building. During this build season, Gus also saw a rebirth of our animation team and an addition to our pep crew, Fuego, our mascot. Gus is pumped and ready for our first competition, the WPI Regional.

Cheers to an amazing build season! Cheers to a good competition season for all teams!

Breakaway!

January 9, 2010

The 2010 FIRST Robotics Competition Game has finally been released! Breakaway is the name of this year's game and it definitely breaks away from the ideas of past FIRST games.

The game pieces this year are soccer balls and they are scored in corner goals on the field. After a ball is scored, it is returned to the field by the human players, on a horizontal track above the field. At the end of the match, robots will race to hang on a bar or another robot, before time runs out. An obstacles robots will have to over come in the matches is: the field is divided into three parts separated by "speedbump"-like structures. This years game is a going to be a challenge, but good luck to all teams in their designing and building!

January 6, 2010

On Christmas eve, FIRST gave us an early Christmas gift by releasing a game hint for the upcoming 2010 game. The below picture is the game hint. Make of it what you can!

2010 Game Hint 1

On January 6, 2010, FIRST released a second game hint. The picture below is the hint. This seems to give rise to more questions than give answers. Happy hinting!

2010 Game Hint 2

For Gus team members, if you'd like to discuss the hint over the holidays with the rest of the team, look for a new topic in the forums.

Savage Soccer South of the Border 2009

December 12, 2009

Techno music was streaming through the air, cheers were erupting from the crowd, and four robots were racing around a field. This was the scene during the finals match at the second annual Savage Soccer South of the Border event hosted by Team 228, Gus. In attendance, there was 12 diverse teams; one from a Boston, one made up of 6th graders from local middle schools, and many others comprised of enthusiastic students. The event was a great success for all who competed or spectated. Congrats to Team Arnold Palmer Light and Team LOLephants for your win. Gus plans on holding the event again next year and anyone with a robot designed for the game is encouraged to come!

Quinsigamond VEX Tournament Champions!

December 5, 2009

On Saturday, December 5, Team 228 competed in the Quinsigamond VEX Robotics Competition in Worcester, Mass. The team really did a Clean Sweep at the event by going undefeated not only in the qualifying rounds, but in the elimination rounds as well, ending the day with a 11-0-0 record and a Champion Trophy. Our team also won the Sportsmanship Award for assisting several other teams at the event and volunteering to fill field resetting positions throughout the entire competition. Team 228 ranked 2nd place for the alliance selections, and chose teams 44 and 2625c for alliance partners. Both 44 and 2625c had very well designed robots that contributed greatly to the success of our alliance. Thank you 44 and 2625c!

Ouc VRC team now will be heading to Dallas, Texas in late April 2010 to compete in the 2010 VRC World Championship. We are very excited because of this long-awaited win, and cannot wait to compete (and win!) at the VRC Championships. Our success at this event will enable our team to the eligible to compete at the Walt Disney World VEX All-Star Challenge, taking place in Fall 2010.

Congrats again to all teams who competed in this past Saturday's competition!

Thank You CUNO Foundation!

November 18, 2009

After weeks of writing letters, exchanging emails, and waiting, Team 228 received a gracious gift from the CUNO Foundation. Gus received a grant for over $8000 so the team could buy 3 new Mac computers with 27 inch screens. The team was wide-eyed when they saw the new technology for the first time and it didn't take long for the team to put them to use. The team is using the new computers to learn 3D animation, update the team website, manage team's photo and video archives, and program robots. We are very appreciative of these new additions to the team and we thank CUNO for their gracious grant!

Savage Soccer at WPI 2009

November 13, 2009

The 13th Savage Soccer competition held at WPI was very successful for Team 228 and the four mini-teams it produced. After the qualifying rounds, all four teams were in the the top 16 out of 50 teams there, two being in the top 8. One of the teams, The LOLephants, were finalists in the competition, coming in second place. Another team, Arnold Palmer Lite, won the Terrific Teamwork award, which was voted on by all the other teams. This team also was ranked in third place after the qualifying rounds and had the high score of 154. The almost all girls team, except for one Mann, The Dino-bots, took home the Team Spirit award from WPI for their contagious enthusiasm. Our last team, entitled, Don't Worry About It, lived up to their name by ranking 8th after the qualification rounds.

Gus is now looking forward to our Savage Soccer competition, Savage Soccer South of the Border, which we will be hosting on December 12th, at Maloney High School in Meriden, CT. If you didn't get enough robot competition at WPI, come to our Savage Soccer competition. Play the same game, but south of the Massachusetts boarder. To sign up or for more information, visit the link on our home.

Hope to see you there!

FIRST was founded in 1989 by the renowned inventor Dean Kamen. The aim of FIRST is to inspire students to careers in math, science, and technology through a fun and engaging robotics competition, which provides students with the ability to meet one-on-one with industry leaders and engineers.

The initial FIRST Robotics Competition comprised of 28 teams competiting in a New Hampshire high school gymnasium. The ensuing years brought rapid growth to the program, to include over 35,000 students, 1,800 teams from 11 countries, competing at over 50 District and Regional Events, culminating with the World Championship Event in Atlanta, Georgia.
